
Gus Ortega
Head of Non-Financial, Operational & Insurance Agency Risk Management, Transmerica
Gus Ortega joined Transamerica in May 2024 as Head of Non-financial Risk Management. Gus reports directly to the Chief Risk Officer and leads operational, information technology, third-party, and model risk management. Furthermore, Gus oversees risk management for Transamerica’s insurance agency entity, which encompasses over 90,000 agents distributing insurance products and services across middle America. Prior to joining Transamerica, Gus was responsible for operational and non-financial risk management at Voya Financial, where he spearheaded the transformation of Voya’s operational risk framework, enhancing efficiency and placing greater emphasis on outcome-based risk activities. Gus also co-led Voya’s AI governance, establishing comprehensive guardrails and risk management protocols for its AI strategy. Before Voya, Gus held senior risk management roles at several prominent financial institutions, including AIG, UBS Investment Bank, and Morgan Stanley. Throughout these positions, Gus contributed significantly to the advancement of their three-lines of defense operating models. Gus holds an MBA in International Business from St. Peter’s University. He is the co-author of one of the first books dedicated to insurance operational risk management, “Fundamentals of Operational Risk for Insurers,” and is an active member of a number of industry risk forums and councils.
